Anyone who has spent a summer evening outdoors knows the moment: you spray repellent on your arms, push your sunglasses back up your nose, and a week later the frames are cloudy, sticky or crazed with fine cracks. It is not your imagination, and it is not a manufacturing fault. Some insect repellents attack plastics — and the reason has everything to do with the chemistry of the active ingredient rather than with the brand on the bottle.
Why DEET damages plastic in the first place
DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) works by interfering with the way mosquitoes and ticks detect us. But the same molecule that makes it an effective repellent also makes it an effective solvent. Chemically it behaves rather like a mild plasticiser: it can penetrate the surface of certain polymers, loosen the bonds that hold the material rigid, and leave it soft, tacky and permanently deformed.
This is well documented rather than anecdotal. The US National Pesticide Information Center notes explicitly that DEET can damage plastics, synthetic fabrics, leather and painted or varnished surfaces, and product labels themselves carry the warning. The effect is concentration-dependent: a 50% DEET formulation attacks materials far more aggressively than a 10% one, and repeated exposure compounds the damage.
What DEET does not harm is equally worth knowing. Natural fibres — cotton, wool, most nylon — generally cope well, which is why DEET-treated skin rarely ruins a T-shirt but frequently ruins a pair of sunglasses.

Two categories deserve a special mention. The first is eyewear, because the coating on a modern lens is a microns-thin optical layer and once it is disturbed there is nothing to restore. The second is camera and binocular bodies, where a rubberised grip left tacky by repellent will stay tacky for the life of the item.
How the damage usually happens
Almost nobody sprays repellent directly onto their glasses. The damage is nearly always indirect:
- Hands. You spray, rub it in, and then adjust your sunglasses, unlock your phone or tighten a watch strap. Residue transfers straight to the plastic.
- Overspray. Aerosols and pump sprays drift. Applying repellent while wearing glasses, a fitness tracker or a headtorch puts a fine mist onto all of them.
- Contact with treated skin. A watch strap sits directly on repellent-treated skin for hours, which is the most prolonged exposure of all.
- Shared bags. A leaking bottle in a rucksack pocket alongside a phone case or sunglasses does the rest.
Signs you have already damaged something
- A frame that feels slightly sticky or greasy even after cleaning.
- Cloudy patches or fine crazing on lenses that will not wipe away.
- A watch strap that has gone soft, shiny or discoloured in the area touching the skin.
- Printed logos, scale markings or lettering that have started to lift or smudge.
None of these are reversible. Solvent damage changes the polymer itself, so polishing or cleaning only removes what little surface remains.
Does PMD or a plant-based repellent damage plastic?
This is where honesty matters more than marketing. PMD (para-menthane-3,8-diol) is a different class of molecule from DEET and does not act as a plasticiser, so plant-based PMD repellents are considerably gentler on gear. That is one of the underrated practical advantages of going DEET-free, alongside the environmental reasons we chose it.
But no repellent is a zero-risk substance to spray at your possessions. Most pump sprays — ours included — contain alcohol as a carrier, and alcohol can dull certain lacquers, leather finishes and delicate lens coatings if it is applied directly and repeatedly. The correct handling advice is therefore identical whichever active you choose:
- Spray onto skin, never onto glasses, watches, phones or optics.
- Take glasses off before applying, and put them back on once the product has dried.
- Wash or wipe your hands before handling coated or polished items.

Can DEET damage a watch strap?
