What does ‘reef-safe’ actually mean?
Legally, almost nothing. There is no certification body, no agreed laboratory test and no regulator that grants a sunscreen the right to call itself reef-safe. Two bottles on the same shelf can carry the same claim while containing completely different UV filters. That is why the useful question is not does it say reef-safe? but what is on the ingredient list?

What does the science actually say?
Sunscreen does not stay on your skin. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) notes that UV filters wash off swimmers and also reach the sea through wastewater, and that concentrations build up in popular, sheltered swimming and snorkelling bays where a lot of people enter a small volume of water.
Laboratory research has linked some of these filters — oxybenzone in particular — to effects on coral including bleaching, DNA damage and deformities in coral larvae. It is fair to be precise about the limits of that evidence: much of it comes from controlled exposures rather than open-reef measurements, and real-world concentrations vary enormously between a busy bay and open water.
It is also fair to keep the scale straight. NOAA and the International Coral Reef Initiative are consistent that warming seas, marine heatwaves, pollution and destructive fishing are the primary drivers of coral decline. Sunscreen is a smaller, local stressor — but it is one of the very few that an individual swimmer can remove entirely, on the day, at no cost to their own protection.
Mineral versus chemical UV filters
- Mineral (physical) filters — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They remain on the skin surface and reflect and scatter UV. They are the filters generally recommended where reef restrictions apply.
- Non-nano matters. Nano-sized mineral particles are small enough to be ingested by corals, plankton and other marine organisms; larger, non-nano particles are the more cautious choice.
- Chemical (organic) filters — absorb UV and convert it to heat. Most are unrestricted, but oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene are the ones that appear on ban lists.
- Aerosols waste product. Spray sunscreens deposit a large share of the dose onto sand, which then washes into the water — a lotion or cream puts more of the product where you want it.
How to choose and use a reef-friendlier sunscreen
- Ignore the front-of-pack claim and read the INCI ingredient list on the back.
- Look for zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, ideally stated as non-nano.
- Avoid oxybenzone (benzophenone-3) and octinoxate (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), and check octocrylene if you are heading somewhere with tighter rules.
- Choose broad-spectrum SPF30 or higher with good UVA protection, as UK and WHO guidance advises.
- Apply generously about 15 minutes before you go out — that also gives the film time to bind to skin before you swim.
- Reapply every two hours, and after swimming, towelling or heavy sweating.
- Cover up: a rash vest, hat and shade between 11am and 3pm reduce the amount of sunscreen you need in the first place. The most reef-friendly dose is the one you never have to wash off.
Does reef-friendly mean weaker sun protection?
No. The protection comes from the SPF and the UVA rating, not from whether the filter is mineral or chemical. The NHS advises at least SPF30 for UVB along with a high UVA rating, and the WHO’s guidance on ultraviolet radiation puts sunscreen alongside shade, timing and clothing rather than in place of them.
