Do mosquito-repellent wristbands work?
Repellent wristbands are usually infused with a plant oil such as citronella, lemongrass or geraniol. The idea is that the oil evaporates and forms a protective zone around you. In practice, that zone is tiny.
What the evidence says
When researchers have tested wearable repellent bands against biting mosquitoes, protection has been minimal or absent. A frequently cited laboratory study found that citronella-based wristbands offered no measurable protection from Aedes mosquitoes, while a topical DEET product gave hours of protection. Reviews of spatial (non-skin) repellents reach a similar conclusion: a band on your wrist does not create a reliable body-wide shield.
Why a wristband cannot protect your whole body

Entomologists point out that mosquitoes do not navigate or flee by the frequencies these gadgets produce; the underlying premise is simply wrong. A free app draining your battery will not keep a hungry Aedes or Anopheles away.
What about citronella candles, coils and plug-ins?
These are more useful than a wristband or app, but with limits. A citronella candle or a mosquito coil can modestly reduce landings in still air close to the source, yet the effect drops sharply with distance and disappears in a breeze. Plug-in vaporisers that release an insecticide (such as a pyrethroid) can help indoors in an enclosed room, but none of these replace protecting your actual skin when you are outdoors.

- Cover up with long, loose, light-coloured clothing at dawn and dusk, when many biting species are most active.

- Sleep under a net or screen windows in high-risk areas.
